Agbor, Delta State– Hon. Mrs. Cordilia Anyangwu, Member of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) Board representing the Ika Ethnic Nationality, has marked her second anniversary in office with a review of her achievements and a call for improved security in Ika land.
Addressing journalists in Agbor, Hon. Anyangwu outlined the commission’s interventions in host communities, including the installation of solar-powered streetlights in Obi Anyima and Alidinma. She also highlighted the provision of classroom desks and chairs to several schools, including Owaoyibu Secondary School, Owa Alero Secondary School, Owa Model Secondary School, and the rehabilitation of two classroom blocks at Ineh-Iteh Primary School in Ekuku Agbor.
The board member further disclosed that DESOPADEC had engaged numerous youths in skill acquisition programs such as tailoring and fashion design, welding and fabrication, upholstery and leather works, and hairdressing.
Beneficiaries received starter packs and a N500,000 grant each to establish their businesses, a move aimed at reducing unemployment and empowering young entrepreneurs. Several women in the host communities were also awarded seed grants of one hundred thousand naira each to help boost their businesses.
While expressing gratitude to Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering support to the commission, Hon. Anyangwu raised concerns over the rising insecurity in Ika land. She noted that the activities of herdsmen and kidnappers have disrupted farming activities, threatening food security in the area.
“Our farmers can no longer access their farms due to fear of attacks. This poses a serious threat to our agricultural output and livelihoods,” she stated. She called on stakeholders, including security agencies and community leaders, to take decisive action to safeguard lives and property.
Hon. Anyangwu reassured constituents of her commitment to delivering more infrastructure and sustainable development, urging continued cooperation between the people and government to achieve progress.
As DESOPADEC continues its mandate, the appeal for enhanced security remains a critical priority to ensure the safety and prosperity of Ika land.
