In a significant turn for the struggling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Hon. Ucheonye Ujor has been appointed as the Local Government Area (LGA) Chairman for Ika North East. This decision was made during a meeting of dedicated PDP members, primarily composed of youths, on Tuesday, June 16, 2025. A motion to support Ujor’s appointment was moved by Comrade Godswill Nduka Nwaturu from Ward 10, Idumuesah, Ika North East, and it was unanimously accepted.

Comrade Nwaturu emphasized the importance of Ujor’s leadership for the new PDP in Ika North East. He praised Ujor’s past political experience and his ability to lead effectively, stating that, “Many who have come across Comrade Ujor would attest to his effective representation, accessibility, teamwork, and commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the people.”

He urged Ujor to embrace the opportunity given to him by the PDP community to revive the party, which has historical roots in their families, and prevent it from fading away.

Nwaturu concluded by assuring Ujor of their full support and commitment to revitalizing PDP, which he referred to as the people’s choice party, in Ika North East.

Several supporters, including Dike Ezeugo from Ward 14, Elvis Ojeifor from Ward 3, Kingsley Bello from Ward 4, Engr. Onyemaechi O. Ogbu from Ward 3, Buhari Mohammed from Ward 3, Afam Johnson from Ward 3, and Catholic Oseroke from Ward 11, expressed their backing for Ujor’s leadership and recounted their positive experiences with him that would help advance the party.

Chief Sunday Odili also spoke during the meeting, emphasizing their commitment to PDP; a party he claims has benefited the citizens of Ika North East LGA and Delta State as a whole for over thirty years. He proclaimed Ika North as a stronghold of the PDP that can never be taken away from the people.

In an interview with reporters, Ujor who has previously served as a Supervisory Councilor for Health in Ika North East LGA, Special Assistant on Youth Mobilization to the previous Governor of Delta State, community youth leader, and PDP leader in the area expressed gratitude towards the new PDP leaders and supporters for the trust placed in him during this crucial rebuilding phase. He remarked that PDP is not merely a political party but a heritage passed down from their ancestors, a legacy that must be preserved. “PDP is an inheritance from our forefathers. It would be a shame if we allowed it to die in our time,” he stated.

“PDP has greatly contributed to our development and our state. The reasons behind the decline of our great party in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are unclear, which is why we have united as one big family under the PDP banner to reaffirm our commitment to rebuilding this cherished organization.

“I recognize that leading the PDP may not be easy, but together, with the support and commitment of all concerned members, we can prevail because our party can never be overlooked by another. We cannot afford to lose the PDP, the party that has been fundamental to the progress of Ika North East and our beloved Delta State.

“I implore every PDP member to remain steadfast, especially during challenging times like these. Every problem has a solution, and the solution to rebuilding PDP requires us to reject APC at this moment.”
