The Agbor Area Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) held a campaign rally in observance of the 2025 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The awareness campaign, which took place on Thursday, June 26, 2025, was part of a week-long series of programs aimed at eliminating drug-related issues in Agbor Kingdom and its surrounding communities.
In an interview with journalists, Mohammed Bello, the Assistant Commander of Narcotics (ACN) at the NDLEA Agbor Area Command, emphasized that the primary goal was to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
He stated, “The annual World Drug Day is an occasion set aside globally to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. It originated from the United Nations. Drug abuse is prevalent in Agbor and its surroundings, making campaigns like this an essential preventive measure. We have also visited Sleek FM as part of this campaign.”
ACN Bello reiterated the agency’s commitment to robust awareness initiatives that will help change the current narrative on drug abuse.
He urged Nigerian youths to refrain from drug use. “I cannot envision a place like Ika nation having a high number of drug addicts and dealers. We have made numerous arrests and prosecutions since we resumed our duties in August last year, following the special request of the Dein of Agbor, His Royal Majesty Dr. Benjamin Ikechuku Keagborekuzi I (CON).
“What we need is information to minimize drug abuse in Agbor Kingdom and the entire Ika nation. To achieve a drug-free Agbor and Ika land, we require the support of local residents and indigenes to report the locations of drug dealers and consumers. Rest assured, any information provided to us will remain confidential,” he stressed. He further advised drug dealers in Agbor to turn to legitimate business practices, warning that anyone caught will face the full consequences of the law.
The Deputy Area Commander of the NDLEA Agbor Area Command, Chief Superintendent of Narcotics (CSN) Isaac Azuka, remarked that World Drug Day is specially designated by the United Nations to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit transactions.
“The youth must stand as ambassadors of peace, rejecting all forms of illicit drugs and immoral practices that could jeopardize their future. As the leaders of tomorrow, you should invest your time in acquiring knowledge and skills for your personal development. The fight against drug abuse is a collective effort to secure the future of our children, Ika nation, Delta State, and Nigeria as a whole.”
CSN Azuka also stressed the necessity of information for prompt action to reduce the rising cases of drug abuse in Agbor Kingdom and Ika land.
Chief Sunday Ibude, the commander of the Agbor Gha-Ihun Vigilante, attended the campaign rally with his team and expressed gratitude to the Dein of Agbor Kingdom for his initiative in bringing the NDLEA to Agbor to protect the youth and the Kingdom from the drug abuse crisis. He also commended ACN Bello and CSN Azuka for their cooperation in the ongoing drug-free campaign.
Participants in the campaign rally also include members of NYSC, Federal Road Safety Corps Members (FRSC) and the Nigeria Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED), Ika South as well as other prominent residents of Ika South LGA.
