As part of efforts to curb insecurity and strengthen safety in the area, the Ukwu-Nzu community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State has officially inaugurated its Vigilante Group to enhance effective community policing.
The official inauguration of the 21-man team was held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the community’s Town Hall.
The initiative, described by residents as a welcome development, was formally unveiled by the President-General of Ukwu-Nzu Development Union, Comrade Emmanuel Basime.
While presenting security items to the Chairman of the Vigilante Group, Mr. Dada Okonji, and his Vice Chairman, Mr. Okonji Andrew Kehinde, Comrade Basime urged members of the team to serve with discipline and integrity.
He noted that their responsibility is to support the safety and security of the community, not to intimidate residents or misuse authority, but to discharge their duties with honesty, fairness, and accountability.
Charging the newly inaugurated team, Basime said: “Discharge your duties within the ambit of the law. Avoid taking the law into your own hands or violating people’s rights.
“Cooperate with security agencies and maintain good collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force.
“Maintain confidentiality, protect sensitive information about community members and security matters, and avoid corruption and favouritism.”
He further warned members against accepting bribes or allowing personal relationships, politics, or tribal interests to influence their decisions, urging them to remain united and uphold professionalism and teamwork.
Speaking on behalf of the revered monarch of Ukwu-Nzu Kingdom, Chief Brian Iwendi, the Onihe of Ukwu-Nzu, commended members of the vigilante team for their willingness and dedication to community service.
He stated: “Today’s inauguration is not just an honour; it is a call to responsibility to protect lives and property with wisdom, courage, fairness, and respect for the law.”
He further charged the team to serve as worthy ambassadors of the community at all times.
